UH-Hilo baseball team splits with San Diego State

Austin Tobin pitched five innings of effective relief and Sean Tamura had three hits as Hawai'i-Hilo defeated San Diego State, 5-3, to salvage a split of a doubleheader yesterday at Simmons' Field in Kailua, Kona.
The Aztecs (2-2) rallied from a 2-0 deficit to beat the Vulcans (4-7) in the opener, 9-2.
Tobin (1-0) replaced starter David Daniel with two on and no outs in the third, and San Diego State ahead 3-0. He proceeded to pitch five scoreless innings, allowing two hits and one walk. Tyson Usui worked the final two innings, allowing two hits and a walk to earn his second save of the season.
Hilo scored two runs in the third and two more in the sixth, with Tamura's single scoring the go-ahead run.
Tamura and David Chu each had two hits in the first game when Hilo's 2-0 lead stood until the fifth. The Aztecs scored one run in the fifth, then added three more in the sixth and five in the seventh.
David Hall had two hits and two RBIs to lead San Diego State.
TRACK AND FIELD
UH women start season: Freshman Ashley Monfort won two events Saturday as the University of Hawai'i women's track and field team officially began its season with the first of four Sunrise Meets at Cooke Field.
Monfort, who is from San Jose, Calif., won the 300-meter dash in 41.68 seconds and the 200 hurdles in 28.66.
Senior Olivia Smoody won the high jump with a leap of 1.60 meters and sophomore Amanda Page took the shot put with throw of 11.39 meters.
PADDLING
Royal Hawaiian sweeps: Royal Hawaiian Shopping Center swept all three competitions of the 19th Annual Ala Wai Challenge yesterday.
Royal Hawaiian won the canoe race, the Makahiki games and tug of war in the event that honored master canoe paddler Michael A. Tongg and raised funds for the Waikiki Community Center.
