California lineman commits to UH

The University of Hawai'i football team has secured a verbal commitment from a highly regarded defensive tackle from California.

Austin Jackson of Mount San Antonio College said he accepted a football scholarship today.

"I committed to the University of Hawai'i because I think the program is heading in the right direction," said Jackson, who is 6 feet 4 and 270 pounds. "I think Hawai'i has a bright future."

Jackson redshirted as a freshman at the University of Southern California in 2001. He played the past two seasons at Mount San Antonio.

Melvin Jackson said his son left USC because it was "not a good fit." Melvin Jackson was an offensive lineman at USC. He played five seasons for the Green Bay Packers.

Melvin Jackson served as a host when UH played USC in Los Angeles in September.
