VFW contest winners named
Kristina Sault, a sophomore at Sacred Hearts Academy, won top honors in the Veterans of Foreign Wars and its Ladies Auxiliary Voice of Democracy contest. This year's theme was "My Commitment to America's Future." She will receive an expense-paid trip to Washington, D.C., in March to compete for a $25,000 scholarship. She has also won a trip to Valley Forge, Pa., in June.
Jessica Lau, an eighth-grader at Iolani School, won first place in the Veterans of Foreign Wars and its Ladies Auxiliary Patriots Pen essay contest. This year's theme was "My Dream for America."
Five students earn scholarships
The University of Phoenix's Hawai'i campus announced recipients of national scholarship programs: Selina Nakahara, a business/management student, received the Opportunity for Improvement in Higher Education 2003 Scholarship; Kristie Caparida, RN; Pomai Konohia, RN; and Suzette Kaho'ohanohano, RN; all nursing students, received scholarship awards from the Native Hawaiian Health Scholarship Program of Papa Ola Lokahi.
Miki Morris, a master of business administration/healthcare management student, was awarded the MedQuist Inc. Scholarship by the American Health Information Management Association's Foundation of Research and Education.
Kahuku seniors in the running
Reis Harney and Natalie Kamauoha, seniors at Kahuku High School, have been selected as semifinalists for the 2003-2004 Coca-Cola Scholars Program. They are among 2,000 vying for $1.8 million in college scholarships.
