THE LEFT LANE
Sniff out scholarships

Advertiser Staff and News Services

Forget using cash to pay for college. If you're smart enough to get into college, perhaps you'll be smart enough to sniff out scholarships in your own back yard, barter or even avoid costs altogether by attending tuition-free colleges. Harvard graduates Gen and Kelly Tanabe (right) , authors of "1001 Ways to Pay For College," will give four free workshops next week, all at 6:30 p.m., at these high schools:
  • Monday, Moloka'i High.
  • Tuesday, Nanakuli.
  • Wednesday, Moanalua.
  • Thursday, Campbell.

They'll discuss saving for college, applying for financial aid even if you don't think you qualify, finding scholarships in your own back yard, doubling your scholarship dollar; and getting student loans forgiven through specific professions (such a heathcare or teaching).

Do I have to know?

Talk about too much information!

Boxes of Valentine's chocolates from See's Candies now include little booklets containing specific and detailed nutritional breakdowns for the candy.

For example, under the category "Nuts and Chews," you can find out that one serving equals 240 calories and 16 grams of fat. One serving equals three pieces. There are 10 servings in a one-pound box, 19 in a two-pound box and 29 in a three-pound box.

You do the math. Or don't. Kind of takes the romance out of the gift, don't you think? Ignorance is bliss.

Check out local idols

"Idol" judge Randy Jackson hammed it up in Waikiki during a break in the Island auditions held in October.
Finally, Honolulu's talent — and talentless — are about to be introduced to the rest of the "American Idol" world.

Tonight's show at 7 p.m. on Fox is a look at O'ahu and the auditions held at Aloha Stadium in September and October.

It is the last of the audition shows, and it just may be the best of the lot. While much of the Mainland has been getting dumped on by snow — 12 inches in parts of the Midwest over the weekend — this show is expected to present one of the competition's strongest talents, plus our picturesque waters, palm trees and sunny weather.

Tune in and find out who our next Jordan Segundo will be.
