QUICK TIMES
Glugging without getting bottoms up

By Wanda A. Adams

Miller Brewing Co. has created a new low-carb version of its popular SKYY Blue malt beverage — SKYY Sport. Coors, Michelob and Rolling Rock already market low-carbohydrate labels. But the fact is, all light beers are low-carb — 1 to 3 grams per bottle. Dry beers are "less-carb" (7 to 8 grams). Ordinary beer runs 10 to 20 grams of carbs per bottle.

And wine? There are no carbohydrates in wine. except for the sweeter ones. Fermentation converts sugar into alcohol. But aboutwine

.com explains that glycerine in wine has a carbohydrate-like effect, averaging 1.2 grams per 3.5-ounce glass. Carb-conscious dieters should be aware that the higher the alcohol content, the more the substances in the wine that act like carbohydrates. In general, 4 ounces of white wine counts as 0.9 carbs and 80 calories. Reds count as 2 carbs, 85 calories, according to Atkins diet literature.

Biggest reason not to drink on any diet? You might just get happy and decide that a little cheating won't hurt.
