Mansanas sparks Castle to upset of Kahuku, 69-63

By Wes Nakama
Advertiser Staff Writer

In a game featuring two of the most athletic boys basketball teams in the O'ahu Interscholastic Association, the smallest player on the court led Castle to a 69-63 overtime upset of previously unbeaten Kahuku last night.

Louis Mansanas Jr., a 5-foot-8 junior point guard, scored a game-high 25 points on shots from all angles to help the Knights (6-2) run past the visiting Red Raiders, who are 6-1 and ranked No. 4 in The Advertiser's statewide Top 10 poll of coaches and media.

Teammate Antone Watanabe, like Mansanas a standout football player, added 17 points — including nine in the four-minute overtime period.

"We knew Kahuku was big and physical, but we relied on our conditioning and speed," Mansanas said. "We needed to get this win to have a chance to get into the playoffs."

Although it was the Red Raiders' first loss, they face a tough three-game stretch over the next 10 days that has them playing Roosevelt (3-4), Kalaheo (7-1) and Kaimuki (5-3). Like most OIA Eastern Division games this season, last night's was tight from the beginning with the teams trading leads throughout in a fast-paced contest.

The Knights led 51-44 with 3:57 remaining in the game, but Kahuku tied it at 51 a minute later. The teams were tied at 53 after four quarters.

In overtime, Castle got a free throw by Bryce Kalauoka'aea, a three-point play by Watanabe and a 3-pointer by Kalauoka'aea to make it 60-53. Mansanas then made a steal and layup to build the lead to 62-53 with 2:40 left.

Clinton Parks' 3-pointer helped the Red Raiders close it to 66-63 with 51 seconds remaining, but Mansanas and Watanabe made three free throws to seal it.
