BYUH cruises past HPU, 83-65

Jake Chrisman scored 19 points and Austin Smylie added 18 to lead BYU-Hawai'i over Hawai'i Pacific University, 83-65, last night in a Pacific West Conference basketball game at the Blaisdell Center.

BYUH improved to 16-2 overall and 6-0 in the PacWest.

Dante Sykes and Aaron Abrams each scored 17 to lead the Sea Warriors , who fell to 6-12, 3-4.

FOOTBALL

Utah hires Uperesa as assistant: Keith Uperesa, a three-sport standout at Punahou School, was named an assistant football coach at the University of Utah yesterday.

Uperesa, who played college football at BYU from 1974-'77, will coach tight ends and oversee the offensive line.

Uperesa was an assistant at Southern California in 2001 and 2002. He was also an assistant at Idaho State in 1999-2000.

Uperesa spent 12 years at Snow College in Utah, first as an assistant from 1987-94 and then as the head coach from 1995-98. He played two seasons in the NFL, with the Denver Broncos (1978) and Oakland Raiders (1979).

TENNIS

Men's top seed falls: Brian Vahaly, the No. 1 men's seed, fell to Yen Hsun Lu, 6-2, 6-0, yesterday at the Hilton Waikoloa Village USTA Challenger on the Big Island.

Angela Haynes, the top seed in the women's draw, rolled to a 6-2, 6-1 win over Anna-Lena Groenefeld.

TRIATHLON

Xterra event to be on TV: The Nissan Xterra World Championship, one of the premier off-road multisport races in the world, will be televised at noon Saturday on CBS (Ch. 9, cable 7).

The event, filmed in Wailea, Maui, on Oct. 26, featured 400 athletes from more than 30 countries. Competitors navigated a 1-mile ocean swim, 20-mile mountain bike up Haleakala and a 7-mile trail run.

ULTIMATE FIGHTING

Hilo's Penn to fight in Las Vegas: Hilo's BJ Penn, a natural lightweight, will move up a weight class to take on welterweight champion Matt Hughes in Saturday's co-main event of Ultimate Fighting Championships 46: Super Natural at the Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas.

Penn (6-1-1) is considered the top lightweight ultimate fighter in the world.
