Associated Press

BALTIMORE — Health authorities are investigating the death of a college student from Hawai'i who developed flu-like symptoms shortly after the start of the new semester at Washington College.

Simon Hultman
Simon M. Hultman, 22, died Monday at University of Maryland Medical Center in Baltimore, college officials said. His mother and other relatives had flown in from Pahoa to be at his side.

Doctors have ruled out severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) and meningitis and were testing for a dozen other illnesses that can cause flu-like symptoms, said John Buettner, a Washington College spokesman.

Hultman was a senior majoring in international studies with a concentration in East Asian studies. He spent part of his sophomore year at Meiji Gakuin in Japan and studied last semester at the University of Pecs in Hungary, Buettner said.

Hultman arrived Jan. 14 on campus from Hawai'i, Buettner said. Five days later, he went to a hospital emergency room, complaining of flu-like symptoms.
