THE LEFT LANE
Michigan folks get the two-scoop treat

Advertiser Staff and News Services

The plate lunch has made it to — of all places — Fenton, Mich., a suburb of Flint. There, Roger Lau and Marian Lau — in-laws who hail from Waimanalo — operate Hawaiian Style Meats and Eats.

Reporter Sally York of the Flint Journal says the business grew out of Marian's kitchen. Her sons were always bringing friends home for Island-style food, and when Marian, a widow who had been working as a bartender, found herself out of work, she and her brother-in-law decided to begin putting their cooking skills to work for fun and profit.

They serve saimin, teriyaki, mirin chicken, pork katsu and kalbi, among other Island favorites. Note: The price range is from $2.29 to $6.75. Plate lunch cheaper on the Mainland than here?

'Amadeus' coming to Diamond Head stage

Brad Goda
Say Vienna to most folks, and they may say "sausage." To the serious music buff, however, the response might be Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, the celebrated composer who created merry music in 18th century Vienna.

And Mozart's rivalry with Antonio Salieri, a composer in the court of Austrian Emperor Joseph II, takes center stage in Diamond Head Theatre's revival of Peter Shaffer's play, "Amadeus," which premieres Feb. 6.

Todd Evans portrays Mozart and Paul Palmore is Salieri. Bill Ogilvie will direct. Other players include Clara Chorley (Constance Weber), Mark Miller (Emperor Joseph II), Dennis Proulx (Count Franz Orsini-Rosenberg), John Mussack (Count Johann Kilian Von Strack) and Richard Aaland (Barton Gottfried Van Swieten).

Shows will be at 8 p.m. Thursdays through Saturdays and 4 p.m. Sundays, through Feb. 22.

Tickets: $12 to $42. Call 733-0274.

Thousands will watch you on your hot date

Average Joes, bachelors and bachelorettes — men and women, 18 and older — are sought for a Hawai'i- based reality show, "Hawai'i's Dream Date," airing at 10 p.m. Feb. 8 and at 9 p.m. Feb. 9 on K5 Hawai'i's WB affiliate.

A casting call will be held at 10:30 a.m. tomorrow at Volcano Joe's on University Avenue. Seth Feldman, former KHNL news director, is producing the show. He produced "Beauties on the Beach" last summer on K5.

On the new show, a team of "love doctors" will match up two contestants who will go on a date that includes a spa make-over, shopping, flowers, dinner and a night at a hotel — separate rooms, of course. The package is worth $1,550.

Jayson Kalani will host.
