Gusts cause power failure

Gusty winds hit parts of O'ahu yesterday, downing two utility poles and forcing the closure of Kamehameha Highway near Dole Plantation at midday.

Wet ground contributed to the toppling of the utility poles at about 12:45 p.m., said Verizon spokeswoman Ann Nishida. The poles were back up by 2:30 p.m., she said.

Gusts topped 40 mph in some areas and may have been to blame for another pole problem yesterday afternoon on Farrington Highway.

A Hawaiian Electric Co. pole leaned over the road near Nanaikapono Elementary School and caused a power failure for about 2,000 customers in Makaha and Wai'anae and forced traffic to be rerouted, said HECO spokesman Jose Dizon.

Power was restored after about an hour, he said.

Strong trades of 20 to 30 mph were expected last night, with gusts to 50 mph possible, according to the National Weather Service.
