Hawaiian Islanders' White signs with Kansas City Chiefs

Isaac White, who helped the Hawaiian Islanders win the af2 Western Division championship last season, signed a contract with the Kansas City Chiefs yesterday.
White, a 1995 Campbell High graduate and former Oregon State linebacker, became the first Islanders player to sign with an NFL team.
"It's clear that his work and coaching with the Hawaiian Islanders arena football team has prepared him to take the next step into the National Football League," Lynn Stiles, the Chiefs' vice president of football operations and player personnel, said in a press release. "This opportunity for Isaac is as much a credit to the Islanders organization for affording him the opportunity to develop as a player, as it is to his own ability, hard work and passion for the game of football." White, who was a running back in high school and a receiver/linebacker with the Islanders, will compete for a roster spot with Kansas City as a nickel back as well as on special teams.
White, who is 6 feet 2 and 235 pounds, amassed 48 solo and 34 assisted tackles In 31 games with the Islanders. He also caught 63 passes for 950 yards and 10 touchdowns.

Women's top seed advances: Top-seeded Melinda Czink defeated Lana Popadic, 6-0, 6-3, yesterday to reach the quarterfinals of the windswept Hilton Waikoloa Village USTA Challenger. Ansley Cargill, the No. 3 seed, was ousted by Jane O'Donoghue, 6-4, 6-3.
In the men's draw, second-seeded Dmitry Tursunov defeated Austria's Zbynek Mlynarik, 6-4, 6-7 (7-5), 6-3, to advance to the quarterfinals.
Tursunov, who was born in Russia but now lives in California, is the only seed remaining among the men.
