Former rapper to lead rally

Former rapper Ma$e, who now goes by the name Pastor Mason Betha, will lead a free youth rally at 7:30 p.m. Thursday at the Waikiki Shell.

The rapper who made two albums and appeared on many others left the recording business in 2000 to devote his life to preaching.

Holy Week talk at Chaminade John Shea will discuss Holy Week Scriptures in April as part of the Mackey Marianist Lectures at Chaminade University.

A free lecture on "The Holy Week Scriptures: A Reflection Through Storytelling and Theology" will be at 4 p.m. Palm Sunday (April 4) at the Mystical Rose Oratory on the Chaminade campus.

Shea, a noted storyteller, is a theologian and research professor at the Institute of Pastoral Studies of Loyola University in Chicago.

He'll also give a daylong workshop April 3 on the readings for the liturgies of Holy Thursday, Good Friday and Holy Saturday. The workshop fee is $10 in advance and $15 at the door.

Conference at diocesan center

Maxine Pollock will speak on "It Takes More Than a Bumper Sticker to be a Christian" in a free morning conference Feb. 28 at the St. Stephen's Diocesan Center auditorium, 6301 Pali Highway.

Pollock, who launched Scrub Bucket Gospel Ministries this year after 20 years as St. Anthony's Roman Catholic church pastoral associate, is a Christian speaker and certified spiritual director.

The session will begin with registration and a continental breakfast at 8 a.m., and runs until noon.

Agenda chosen for Legislature

The year-old Interfaith Alliance Hawai'i on Wednesday put forth its agenda for the slate of issues the group will be supporting during this year's state legislative session.

Topics include comprehensive public funding of elections, ice and addictions, physician-assisted suicide, same-sex marriage, legalized gambling and juvenile justice and youth prison reforms.

Speakers included Judy Rantala with the Coalition Against Gambling, Dr. Jerry Chang (campaign reforms), Irene Matsumoto (same-sex marriage), the Rev. Alison Dingley (drugs and addictions) and KahBo Dye-Chiew (youth issues).
