HONOLULU

Dobelle's, UH's attorneys meet

Attorneys representing the University of Hawai'i Board of Regents and former president Evan Dobelle, whom the board fired June 15, met for almost three hours yesterday afternoon, but had no comment afterward.

"I will have no comment," said board attorney Barry Marr in a voicemail message.

Rick Fried, who represents Dobelle, said the same.


'Uncle bandit' faces charges

A man police call the "uncle bandit" was federally charged yesterday in the May 7 robbery of First Hawaiian Bank's branch at 433 Kapahulu Ave.

Police arrested Pasesa Williams, 46, Tuesday at Salt Lake Shopping Center.

Williams is under investigation in five other robberies: American Savings Bank's branch at the Kamehameha Shopping Center on May 5; First Hawaiian's Liliha branch on April 30; American Savings' McCully branch on April 22; City Bank's Kalihi branch on April 17; and American Savings' Liliha branch on April 5.


Motorcyclist injured on H-1

A man was critically injured in a motorcycle accident last night on H-1 freeway.

The accident was on a westbound lane near the Pearl Harbor onramp at about 6:30 p.m. The military man, 21, was taken to The Queen's Medical Center in critical condition, said EMS district chief Jason Kaneshiro.

Police were still on the scene investigating the accident late last night.


WINDWARD O'AHU

Water main under repair

The Board of Water Supply was expected to complete repair on a 20-inch concrete transmission main last night on Hihimanu Street in Waimanalo.

Traffic on Hihimanu between Ahiki and Ehukai streets was closed. Hihimanu is used as a bypass road by area residents. Work was expected to continue through last night.


O'AHU'S NORTH SHORE

National Guard Band performs

The 40-member Hawaii National Guard Band will present a Fourth of July concert featuring patriotic music from 5 to 6:30 p.m. at the Waialua bandstand.

The bandstand is across from the Waialua Public Library.

Concertgoers are encouraged to add to the atmosphere by bringing picnic suppers.


CENTRAL O'AHU

Cancer patient has new project

A child cancer patient who made and sold buttons in support of the victims of 9/11 has started a new project aimed at sending thousands of care packages to troops in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Thirteen-year-old Rochan Pinho of Kapolei is raising money to put together "Love and Aloha" packages that would include lei, candy and a letter from an Island resident.

Pinho will be selling buttons for $3 tomorrow in front of the Kunia Walmart from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Pinho has raised $23,000 making about 5,000 Sept. 11 pins. He was diagnosed with medula blastoma, a brain cancer, at age 7 and will be undergoing neck bone fusion surgery Aug. 12.


BIG ISLAND

Crash kills man on Saddle Road

Big Island police said an unidentified man died yesterday after the car he was driving ran off the Saddle Road outside Hilo.

Fire officials said the car was found about 200 feet off the road, with the man pinned inside and already dead.

Speed was believed to have been a factor in the crash, police said.

Police called to the scene at 11:46 a.m. determined the driver and lone occupant of the Subaru station wagon was traveling west and away from Hilo when he lost control of the vehicle.
