Kane'ohe boat leads division

Advertiser Staff

Ghost, a 38-foot boat from Kane'ohe Yacht Club, moved from fourth to first yesterday in the 13th biennial West Marine Pacific Cup sailing race.

Ghost, which is skippered by Lou Ickler and navigated by Kim Ickler, leads Division A in the 2,070-mile race from San Francisco Bay to Kane'ohe Bay.

Ghost reported steady winds of 15 to 20 knots and 8-foot seas.

Tango, a Beneteau 40CC based in Sausalito, Calif., took over the overall fleet lead and Division B lead. Tango was followed by California Girl and two Hawai'i entries, Cirrus and Ikaika.

Bodacious led Division C, which left San Francisco on Tuesday. Nine Division D yachts crossed the start line yesterday in the staggered start format. Two more groups will start today and tomorrow.

Race and boat positions can be found at www.pacificcup.org.

Punahou grad Berg leads U.S. in Mexico

Punahou graduate Lindsey Berg earned Best Setter honors at the Pan American Cup after leading Team USA to a second-place finish last weekend in Mexicali, Mexico.

The Americans fell to Cuba, 24-26, 25-19, 25-20, 25-17, in the final. Nancy Metcalf had a match-high 17 points and 17-year-old Cynthia Barboza added 10 for the U.S. team, which won the tournament last year.

"Cuba is a great team and they played fantastic," said Team USA assistant coach Kevin Hambly, who served as this team's head coach for the tournament. "We were better prepared (for Cuba) than we were in the first round but could not maintain the high level for a long period."

Despite the loss, the tournament was still a success for the Americans, who qualified for next year's World Grand Prix by virtue of their top-four finish.
