DMC championship open to turntablists ages 12 and older

Hey, DJ, bring that back!

For the fourth consecutive year, Double-O-Spot Productions is presenting Honolulu-based preliminaries for the DMC/Technics American Battleground DJ Championship. The 2004 competition drops Saturday at Studio 1 from 9 p.m. to 2 a.m.

DMC — Dance Music Community or Disco Mix Club, depending on whom you ask — is an international multimedia company boasting two decades of support for DJ and club culture. Honolulu is the last of 15 cities hosting preliminaries for the Aug. 7 American Battleground finals in Los Angeles.

The Battleground winner moves on to the DMC World Championship, September, in London.

With competition free, open to ages 12 and older and walk-ups welcome, the Honolulu DMC battle attracts turntablists from Hawai'i, the Pacific Rim and Mainland. The event is typically a multisensory treat for the audience, too. Competition begins with a pre-elimination round of two-minute spins. Turntablists making it to the elimination round are allowed six minutes each. A final battle between the top two DJs decides the winner.

Turntablists are judged on technical skills and tricks, beat juggling, originality and stage presence. The contest is restricted to vinyl turntablists.

DJ Solution from Honolulu-based Nocturnal Sound Krew has swept the local preliminaries three years in a row.

Ages 16 and up welcome to attend. Call 591-3500 for more information or to sign up. Pre-sale tickets are $15 at www.groove tickets.com, Cheapos, Jelly's, Hungry Ear and the UH Campus Center.

Anna bannanas hits 35

What kind of birthday gift does one get for a venerable Mo'ili'ili nightclub that's been around since Jimi Hendrix closed Woodstock?

Just show up and show your love as Anna Bannanas celebrates its 35th birthday with a weeklong party kicking off Monday night.

The joint — which has seen days as a hippie pizza bar, makeshift Mexican cantina and perennial UH student watering hole — has earned much of its fame for supporting live music. So it's apropos that Anna's bash week will be heavy on bands.

Here's the rundown:

  • Monday: "Open Mic & Musicians' Appreciation Night." 9 p.m.; entry is $2.
  • Wednesday: "Dirty Money." Obscenity-spewing bands Potty Mouth and The Miltons on stage. 10 p.m.; $5.
  • July 10: "Warsaw Poland Bros." After a show at Anna's tonight and gigs around O'ahu all week, the Cali-based ska/reggae/dancehall/dub group returns for an encore. 9 p.m.; $6.
  • July 11: "KIPO-FM Blues Fest" and "Lazy Summer." Blues bands, Cajun food from Kevin's Two Boots, a pool full of beer and the Coors girls. Burp! From 2 p.m.; $5 for Hawai'i Public Radio members, $7 for nonmembers.

Information on all events: 946-6959 or 946-5910.
