Crash victim not identified

Big Island police are trying to use fingerprint records to identify a man who died after a car crash Wednesday on Saddle Road in South Hilo, and were unable to release his name yesterday.

Traffic investigators said the man was the only occupant in a Subaru station wagon traveling west on Saddle Road that veered off the roadway and flipped over at 11:46 a.m.

The station wagon landed more than 200 feet from the road, seven-tenths of a mile west of the 10-mile marker.

The death was the Big Island's 23rd traffic fatality of the year compared with 15 on the same date in 2003.

Navy submariner killed in accident

A 21-year-old Navy man died early yesterday at The Queen's Medical Center after he was injured in a motorcycle crash Wednesday night on Nimitz Highway, seven-tenths of a mile east of the Hickam Air Force Base main gate.

The man was assigned to a submarine at Pearl Harbor, according to Navy officials. An investigator at the medical examiner's office said he could not release the victim's name until his identity is confirmed.

Police said the man was speeding when his 2000 Honda motorcycle hit a guardrail at 6:35 p.m.
