Six acres burn on Moloka'i
KAUNAKAKAI, Moloka'i Maui County firefighters yesterday battled a six-acre brush fire at Kawela.
Units from Puko'o, Kaunakakai and Ho'olehua and the Department of Fire Control helicopter, based at Kahului, responded to the 2:36 p.m. alarm. The fire was under control about an hour later. No damage was reported.
Meanwhile, fire crews on Maui responded to two minor fireworks-related fires in Wailea yesterday.
Copter rescues injured hiker
WAIHE'E, Maui The Maui Department of Fire Control dispatched its helicopter to rescue an injured hiker yesterday in Waihe'e Valley.
Fire officials said they received a call at 2:45 p.m. reporting that a male had injured his ankle near the dam and swimming hole in the valley. The helicopter airlifted the hiker to an ambulance waiting at Waihe'e Park at 3:55 p.m.

Kailua school gets benches
The Pali Lions donated 250 feet of benches to Enchanted Lake Elementary School over the weekend, along with a $10,000 Weinberg grant.
The benches were installed by members of the Pali Lions, Koolaupoko Lions, Kahaluu Lions and the Enchanted Lake PTA.
"Monies remaining from the project will go to purchase much-needed computer furniture and to make improvements to our computer lab," said school secretary Wendy Crockett.

Ex-congressman Gill honored
The Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Coalition-Hawai'i honored former congressman and lieutenant governor Tom Gill last night in conjunction with the 40th anniversary of the Civil Rights Act.
Gill was a freshman congressman from Hawai'i and played a key role in writing what became Title VI of the Civil Rights Act. The bill passed in June 1964 and was signed into law on July 2, 1964.
Gill, who would later be elected lieutenant governor under Gov. John Burns, was honored last night at a dinner that also acknowledged the work of other volunteers who took part in the Martin Luther King Day events here.
Tour-bus stops to be moved
Tour buses that normally make stops on Kuhio Avenue between Seaside Avenue and Kanekapolei Street will temporarily move their pickup and dropoff points to six marked bus spaces along the east curb of Seaside Avenue between Kalakaua and Kuhio avenues starting July 6. The city adjusted tour-bus stops and freight loading zones in the area to accommodate construction for the Kuhio Avenue improvement project.
Freight loading on the east curb of Seaside Avenue will be restricted to evenings between 6 p.m. and 6:30 a.m. A new freight loading zone will be established on Seaside Avenue mauka of Kuhio Avenue for 60 feet between Kuhio Avenue and Ala Wai Boulevard. Freight loading will also be allowed seven blocks away along the east curb of Namahana Street between Kuhio Avenue and Ala Wai Boulevard.
