Students raise $48,000 for AUW
Students at O'ahu's public and private schools raised nearly $48,000 during the 2003-04 school year for Aloha United Way through the Student Aloha Program. Students organized activities to raise money.
Top donor schools were: Ma'ema'e Elementary, Niu Valley Middle and Kaiser High School, as well as, Saint Francis School, Mid-Pacific Institute and Sacred Hearts Academy.
"At a young age, these students are learning important lessons about community service and compassion for others," said Irving Lauber, AUW president. "I'm always impressed with the energy and excitement that students put into their fund-raising efforts."
Glen Grant fund reaches goal
The anniversary of the death of Glen Grant on June 19, 2003, was observed with a gift to the Glen Grant Endowed Scholarship Fund to reach its goal of $35,000.
The fund can now begin providing scholarships to assist graduate students in the University of Hawai'i American Studies Department.
Grant was a popular teacher, historian, writer and storyteller.
Money to help hunting access
Hawai'i has received a $47,560 National Shooting Sports Foundation grant to help expand hunting opportunities.
The state Department of Land and Natural Resources received the grant for a program designed to identify land-ownership patterns, and provide money for negotiating public hunting access leases with selected landowners.
"Our primary goal will be to provide new opportunities for hunters in areas previously used solely for agriculture,"Êsaid Peter Young, chairman of the state Department of Land and Natural Resources.
Masons pay for students' books
Fifth-graders at Fort Shafter Elementary School will have new American history textbooks next school year through a $1,000 grant from the Pearl Harbor Masonic Lodge.
The grant will pay for 30 to 35 textbooks and CDs, tapes and maps related to American history.
Mental health group gets grants
Mental Health Kokua has been awarded two grants to expand residential and rehabilitation services in Hawai'i.
A $20,000 grant from the Atherton Family Foundation will go toward the cost of acquiring three homes on Kaua'i.
The Friends of Hawaii Charities has donated $20,000 for furnishings and equipment for a new transitional housing facility on O'ahu.
