It's tourney time for boys and girls of summer

Two years ago, the state of Hawai'i was glued to the television as a Little League team from Waipi'o won two dramatic games and the hearts of its hometown fans.

Waipi'o was the first team from Hawai'i since 1988 to qualify for the Little League World Series for 11- and 12-year-olds in Williamsport, Pa., and ESPN televised all its games.

"I didn't really notice how important it was, but now I look back and it was a really big thing," pitcher Kurt Tanabe said.

Tanabe, now 14, won both games for Waipi'o, striking out 22 batters in 12 innings, and allowing seven hits and three runs.

"It was a big thing for me and the team," said Tanabe, who will be a sophomore at Pearl City High.

Now, it starts all over again.

State tournaments for baseball and softball youth leagues are either just completed or will be conducted in the next month.

State winners will qualify for regional or zone tournaments and the winners of those tournaments advance to the World Series or national championships.

"When you play in the stadium and it's on TV, you are more nervous," Tanabe said of his experiences at the World Series.

"(Games are) more relaxing now; now when you play, you are more used to it."

Waipi'o did not advance to the championship bracket because of a tiebreaking formula, but Tanabe, who will be joined by Waipi'o teammates Cory Yuh, Jonathan Abe and Daniel Nishimoto on Pearl City's junior varsity baseball team next year, said the experience was unforgettable.

Especially because his family taped his televised games.

"It just brings back good memories," he said. "I'm over it already. I put it away in my dad's closet already; we don't watch it anymore."
