Renegade maintains lead in sailing race

Advertiser Staff

Renegade, a 70-foot sloop from Vancouver, British Columbia, continued to lead the fleet in the biennial IBM 2004 Victoria to Maui yacht race yesterday, but the real winner could come from boats in the smaller divisions.

Renegade, which is being skippered by Dan Sinclair and navigated by Ron Ogilvy, was reported to be 469 nautical miles from the finish in Lahaina.

Flash, a 52-foot vessel, and Cassiopeia, a 72-footer, were close behind. All three are competing in Division 1 for the larger boats.

Race spokeswoman Pamela Bendall said last night that the first boat is expected to finish early tomorrow morning.

Meanwhile, the battle for corrected time honors was being waged by Voodoo Child and Time Bandit, both from the Division 2 fleet, and Tranquillite of Division 3.

Voodoo Child, a J130 sloop from Tacoma, Wash., trailed only Flash and Renegade in corrected time.

Divisions are based on a formula of size and weight of the boat, waterline, sail configuration and how a boat can perform in certain kinds of weather.
