UH raising tuition 3 percent

 •  U.S. students paying less for college

The University of Hawai'i-Manoa is in the midst of a phased-in tuition increase, but at 3 percent a year over five years, neither tuition nor financial aid packages have increased substantially — with tuition rising to $3,408 from $3,024 in 2001 when the increases were approved.

Gail Koki, director of the financial aid office, said the office does not calculate average financial aid packages, but many residents receive $5,000 to $6,000 a year in aid, which exceeds the cost of tuition.

However, those packages often include loans, which some students turn down. "A portion of the students will decline their loans and only take the stuff that is free, such as state tuition waivers and scholarships," Koki said.

Meanwhile, almost half of UH-Manoa's students pay the full tuition costs, but they might see some of that back in tax credits or deductions.
