Younger sister Kayla, 10, and her cousins the Teraos, David, 10, and Joshua, 8, all won in Saturday's competition.

"I feel happy that the whole family can win a gold medal," David said. "We're all junior national champions. Grandma's house is the house of champions."

The Hashizumes flashed four fingers from the stands after Risha's win as her teammates from Shobukan Judo Club congratulated her on her first junior national title.

"It feels pretty good," said Risha, 13, who was named Outstanding Female Competitor from yesterday's competition.

"What our sensei stresses is to leave a name, to make people remember you," said champion Derron Maki, bottom, grappling with Damon Hom. Hom finished third in the Juvenile A 44-kilogram classification.

"Last year, she was disappointed because she got the silver," said her sensei John Ko'omoa. "The first thing she said was 'Next year, I'm getting the gold.' "

After watching three of their grandchildren win Saturday, the Hashizumes were asking Ko'omoa if Risha could pull off the sweep.

"After the two boys and her sister won yesterday, they said 'Can we make it four?' " Ko'omoa said. "The way Risha is focused, I said 'It's only a matter of time. By the end of tomorrow, you'll have four national champion grandchildren.' "

Grandma Hashizume wasn't putting all of her hopes on a sweep, though.

"We were skeptical, but they won," she said. "It was terrific."

Risha Mishima's focus on winning the gold was evident as she won all four of her matches by ippon.

"She worked hard for it and she's very focused because she knew that's what she wanted," Ko'omoa said. "I think it showed on the mat. She went on the mat with complete confidence."

The Hashizumes videotaped their grandchildren during the tournament.

"We videotape all their matches, and some of their opponents' because they're going to meet up later so we want them to see," Sue said.

"What our sensei stresses is to leave a name, to make people remember you," said Maki, winner of the Juvenile A 44-kilogram division and an incoming freshman at Moanalua High School.

Maki said the tournament is different from local events where judoka are familiar with one another.

"(In) local competition (you're) not nervous because you know them," Maki said. "You know who you're going to play. Compared to nationals, you don't know who you're going to go against so you don't know what to expect and you have to think differently when you play."

To win a tournament of this caliber, focus and mental preparation are just as important as physical conditioning, said another competitor.

"Without focus, you'll lose," said Tenri Judo Club's Arnold Toriumi who won the Juvenile A 48-kilogram division. "You need 100 percent focus, maybe 110."

Toriumi won his second straight junior national gold while teammate Taylor Ibera won her third gold.

"You feel a little (pressure) because everyone is after you," said Ibera, 12.

In between her three matches, Ibera said she focused, stayed warm and watched her opponents so "I could think of strategies to beat them."

With more than 1,000 competitors, there were plenty of styles for judoka to contend with.

"Mainland guys usually (have) stronger upper body strength so what our judo club tries to stress is technique," Maki said. "We try to throw faster than the Mainland guys and we know how they play from previous nationals."

For competitors from the Mainland, like Jasmeen Sapp of Wakamusha Judo Club in Atlanta, the tournament highlighted a week's worth of going to the beach, snorkeling and sightseeing.

"I was like 'Yay, I won first place in Hawai'i,' " Sapp said of her female open division win. "My expectation was to do good no matter what I did and to go home satisfied, whether I got no place or I got first.

"I had a lot of fun."
