Outrigger master of Macfarlane

The Hui Lanakila senior men's crew, from left, Manny Kulukulualani, Andrew Penny, Tomas Schlotman, Mel Pu'u, Raven Aipa and Leighton Look, won yesterday's race.

If it's the Fourth of July, it must be time for the Outrigger Canoe Club to turn on its paddling power.

Outrigger relied on club pride to earn a convincing — and somewhat surprising — victory in the prestigious Walter J. Macfarlane Regatta yesterday at Waikiki Beach.

The Outrigger Canoe Club captured the senior women's race with the crew of, from front, Mahea Batlik, Mary Smolenski, Traci Phillips, Jen Horner, Malia Kamisugi and steersman Walter Guild.

The Macfarlane Regatta has been hosted by the Outrigger Canoe Club at Waikiki Beach since 1943, making it the longest-running canoe race in the state. More than 1,000 paddlers from the O'ahu Hawaiian Canoe Racing Association participated in the day-long regatta.

"We try to win the regatta every week," Outrigger head coach Anthony Hunt said. "But this is a special race for our whole club, for obvious reasons. We always feel like we have a chance to win this one."

Outrigger scored 86 points yesterday for its first regatta victory of the season. Outrigger had not placed higher than fourth or scored more than 55 points in any of the previous four regattas this season.

"I'm a little surprised that we scored that many points, but that's our tradition," Hunt said. "We start out the year slow, then everybody comes out for the Macfarlane race and we get going from there."

Hui Lanakila won the prized senior men's race, and placed second overall with 66 points. Lanikai was third with 63 and Kailua fourth with 58.

Healani scored 23 points to win the A Division for smaller clubs. 'Anuenue and Keahiakahoe were right behind with 22 points each.

One of the traditions of the Macfarlane Regatta allows for "open" steersmen. Because of the large crowds and consistent waves at Waikiki, each club uses its best steersmen to keep the canoes on course.

For example, Jim Foti of the Lanikai Canoe Club got to steer for different crews in the boys, girls, men's and women's races.

"It was fun, but on the edge of being very challenging," is how Outrigger's Walter Guild described the conditions.

Guild was one of several steersmen that Outrigger used yesterday.

"We are loaded with good steersmen, so we wanted to disperse it," Hunt said. "We wanted to have fresh guys back there and I think that helped us to have a good performance."

The Outrigger women were particularly impressive, winning the novice A, sophomore, junior, senior, 40-and-older and 55-and-older races. Guild steered the victorious sophomore and senior races.

The senior women's race is considered the top race for females, and Guild said he redeemed himself. At last year's Macfarlane Regatta, Guild guided the Outrigger senior women off course, resulting in a disqualification.

Yesterday, Guild steered the Outrigger canoe into perfect position on a wave that they rode all the way to a convincing victory.

"It was a lucky wave; it came out of nowhere," he said.

Outrigger completed the 1ð-mile course in 12 minutes, 1.63 seconds. Second-place Hui Lanakila came in 25 seconds later.

Other members of the winning Outrigger crew were Mahea Batlik, Mary Smolenski, Traci Phillips, Jen Horner and Malia Kamisugi.

Hui Lanakila won eight races yesterday, and none was more exciting than the prestigious senior men's race.

The crew of Manny Kulukulualani, Raven Aipa, Andrew Penny, Tomas Schlotman, Mel Pu'u and Leighton Look edged Outrigger by less than two seconds.

It was particularly gratifying for Look, who said he was given "one last shot" to steer the senior men's crew.

"They threw an old dog a bone," said Look, who normally steers Hui Lanakila's 40-and-older crew. "I've been trying for 30 years to win this. Finally."

In another Macfarlane tradition, the winning senior men's crew got to sip champagne out of the silver Walter Macfarlane Memorial Trophy.

Na 'Ohana O Na Hui Wa'a

The Kane'ohe Canoe Club scored its lowest point total of this season, but remained undefeated by winning the Koa Kai Regatta yesterday at Ke'ehi Lagoon.

Kane'ohe scored 67 points to edge Manu O Ke Kai by two points. Lokahi was third with 52.

Koa Kai won the AA Division with 45 points, and Waikiki Beach Boys won the A Division with 26 points.

Kane'ohe won nine races, including six of the youth races.

Manu O Ke Kai won seven races, including the prestigious senior men's race.
