Renegade projected as first to arrive in yacht race

Advertiser Staff

Renegade is projected to be the first ship to finish the biennial IBM 2004 Victoria to Maui yacht race.

The 70-foot sloop from Vancouver, British Columbia, covered 276 miles yesterday and is projected to finish at Lahaina this morning at 9:42.

Flash, also competing in Division 1 with Renegade, however, is in first place in the division and the fleet, based on corrected time. Flash is expected to finish sometime around 9:30 tonight.

Cassiopeia, a 72-footer also competing in Division 1, is expected to finish at about 4 a.m. tomorrow.

Voodoo Child leads in Division 2 over Time Bandit, in what is shaping up to be the tightest race in the three divisions.

Time Bandit, based out of Orcas Island, Wash., has won three major West Coast races this year, and is approaching Maui from the South.

Voodoo Child, a J130 sloop from Tacoma, Wash., is approaching the finish from the north, meaning the winds will decide which ship will reach Lahaina first.

Tranquillite leads Division 3.

Divisions are based on a formula of size and weight of the boat, waterline, sail configuration and how a boat performs in different weather.

Winnetou maintains Pacific Cup lead

Winnetou, Martin Braun's San Francisco Yacht Club entry, covered 252.3 miles yesterday to maintain her lead over the fleet and Division E on the seventh day of the West Marine Pacific Cup race from San Francisco Bay to Kane'ohe Bay.

Winnetou, a Santa Cruz 52, leads Morpheus, which is second in Division E and in the fleet.

Mari Cha IV covered 418.6 miles in a 24-hour period en route to Hawai'i. The holder of several monohull records, including a 24-hour run of 525.7 miles in the Atlantic, she is pursuing a Pacific record as well.

Due to the handicap of being the biggest and fastest on the water, Mari Cha IV is scored on correction as fourth in Division F.

The 2,700-mile race is expected to finish sometime this weekend.

Other division leaders are: Eyrie in doublehanded, First Light in Division A, California Girl in Division B, Inspired Environments in Division C, Andiamo in Division D and Braveheart in Division F.
