ISLAND LIFE SHORTS
Familiar faces on 'North Shore'

Advertiser Staff and News Services

It's getting crowded on the evening soap "North Shore." Last night, we got to see local actors Kala Alexander and Melvin Puu play the tough guys who wouldn't let poor Gabriel in the water until he paid a bill to the bully. We also saw Kimo Hugho of Hokule'a fame spread the clouds and save the day to watch a meteor shower as a kahuna. Matty Liu, who used to work on "Byrds of Paradise," also appeared.

And then there's KITV sports anchor Robert Kekaula, the show's mainstay as the head of hotel security. Could it be we're watching the big guy bloom? Word is he's going to get more speaking lines as the show progresses.

And you thought he was just another pretty face.

Emmy-winning 'Race' is back

Reichen Lehmkuhl, left, and Chip Ardnt won last year's "The Amazing Race."

CBS

Pop quiz: Which show won last year's inaugural Emmy Award for best reality series? No, it wasn't "American Idol," "Survivor" or even "The Bachelor."

It was the overlooked and underrated "Amazing Race," a heart-pounding endeavor that sends 11 two-person teams scrambling across the world in a competition to capture $1 million.

The series is back at 8:30 tonight on KGMB-9 for a fifth go-around with an array of new power couples. By the time this race ends, the surviving teams will have covered 72,000 miles, over six continents, in 29 days.
