Lions' drive to aid Wahiawa students
Advertiser Staff
The Wahiawa Lions will be collecting donations of school supplies or money from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. July 17 and 18 at the Wahiawa Shopping Center and Tamura's Market to benefit children attending Wahiawa's public schools.
Supplies needed include No. 2 pencils, red and black ballpoint pens, wide-ruled paper, portfolios, erasers, glue, paper towels, tissue, liquid soap, crayons, colored markers, composition notebooks, highlighters, scissors and manila folders.
"We live in a poor area," said Jack Kampfer, director of religious education at Our Lady of Sorrows Church, who is organizing the drive.
He said he spoke with area principals and teachers who say their students come to school without the right supplies. Teachers often buy extra supplies for their students.
Last year the Wahiawa Lions collected about 1,700 pounds of school supplies, filling three pick-up trucks. They also raised $319 in the first collection drive.
Kampfer hopes to do the same or better.
"We have to do the best we can," he said. "Every little bit helps."
