Kailua grad Takekawa among NCAA leaders

Saint Mary's (Moraga, Calif.) soccer player Sarah Takekawa was one of 321 athletes selected to the 2004 NCAA Leadership Conference at Disney's Wide World of Sports Complex and Coronado Springs Resort in Lake Buena Vista, Fla., May 31 to June 3.
"It was the most diverse group of people I will ever come in contact with for the rest of my life," said Takekawa, a 2001 graduate of Kailua and senior midfielder for the Gaels.

The student-athletes who attended the conference were from Divisions I, II and III schools, and represented fall, winter and spring sports.
A total of 1,201 nominations from 295 schools were submitted by Division I, II and III Student-Athlete Advisory Committees.
Takekawa, a health science major, is involved with student affairs on campus, including the SAAC.
"It's just the kind of person I am, I like to get involved," Takekawa said of the reasons she participates in various committees. "I like to have a say."
ACADEMIC HONORS
Sixteen former Hawai'i high schools athletes were named to the West Coast Conference Commissioner's Honor Roll.
The conference recognized the student-athletes in three categories: gold (3.75 to 4.00 grade point average), silver (3.50 to 3.74) and bronze (3.00 to 3.49).

Women's Water Polo
Loyola Marymount sophomore utility Brianne Castillo-Huang (Iolani '02 of Honolulu) was named to the American Water Polo Coaches Association All-Academic Team with a 3.37 grade point average.
Castillo-Huang, who played in 20 games with four goals, earned excellence honors, one of three categories handed out by the AWPCA.
The Lions lost to Southern California in the national championship game, 10-8, and finished the season with a program record in wins (26-6).
Softball
Lewis & Clark College (Portland, Ore.) sophomore catcher Randi Miura (St. Andrew's '02 of Waipahu) was named first team All-Northwest Conference.
Miura batted .268 in 39 games with six doubles and 14 RBIs.
Signing
Dane McCleary, a defender from Iolani School, signed to play soccer at the University of San Diego.
McCleary was an Advertiser All-State first team selection and the Interscholastic League of Honolulu's Defensive Player of the Year.
