Advertiser News Services

Mari Cha IV, a 140-foot monohull racing machine, obliterated the record of the West Marine Pacific Cup race from San Francisco Bay to Kaneohe Bay yesterday by more than one day.

Mari Cha IV crossed the finish line of the 13th biennial race at 6:13 last night, completing the 2,070-nautical-mile journey in 5 days, 5 hours, 38 minutes, 10 seconds.

Stanley rallies USA to conquest of Russia

Hawai'i's Clay Stanley and Reid Priddy each scored a team-high 21 points to rally Team USA to a five-game victory over Russia Monday in the championship match of the inaugural USA Global Challenge in Austin, Texas.

The Americans won 19-25, 23-25, 25-18, 25-20, 15-10 at Delco Activity Center. They finished the tournament 4-1.

"We fought off a lot of tough serves and started getting swings on them instead of giving up aces or near aces," said Team USA head coach Doug Beal.

Stanley had 16 kills, four aces and one block as USA avenged an earlier loss to the Russians in the Global Challenge.

Russia, the world's fifth-ranked team, swept the U.S. June 30 to start the tournament after taking two out of three matches from sixth-ranked Team USA in a Houston series June 25-28.
