Big Island team wins volleyball national title

Pilipa'a Volleyball Club of the Big Island, won the 17-under club division of the USA Boys Junior Olympic Volleyball Championship Wednesday at Austin, Texas.
Pilipa'a defeated South Florida, 25-23, 12-25, 16-14, for the championship, the first for a team from the Big Island. The team went 10-0 in the three-day tournament.
Pilipa'a's Ephriam Kahanu, a recent Waiakea High graduate, was named the division's most valuable player. Also named to the all-tournament team were Napua Cabatu, Isaac DeGuzman and Jonah Kalima.
Other Pilipa'a members were Aaron Chun, Andy Dunn, Cory Enriques, Gordon Lacy, Aaron Osorio and Treston Yasso.
Ecko Osorio was Pilipa'a's head coach. Ikaika Marzo and Ryan Tsuji were the assistant coaches.
Pilipa'a consisted of players from Hilo, Pahoa and Waiakea high schools.
The team is scheduled to return to Hilo today on Aloha Airlines Flight 45 at 6:09 p.m.
Golf
Chun shoots 68 in U.S. Amateur qualifying: Mari Chun, a senior at Kamehameha Schools, shot a 5-under par 68 at Honolulu Country Club to qualify for the U.S. Women's Amateur Championship.
The U.S. Women's Amateur Championship is Aug. 9 to 15 at The Kahwa Club in Erie, Pa. Mariko Shimozaki (74), of Kihei, Maui, and Stephanie Kono (80), of Honolulu, are first and second alternates, respectively.
Bridget Dwyer, a Punahou School alum from Kailua, shot a 72 and finished second at a qualifier in Portland, Ore., to earn a spot in the championship.
Olson leads OCC Men's Invitational: Peter Olson shot a 4-under-par 67 yesterday for a three-stroke lead after the first round of the Oahu Country Club Men's Invitational.
Olson, an OCC member, had an eagle on the par 5 No. 6 and four birdies on the back nine.
Shannon Tanoue, the Manoa Cup runner-up, and OCC member Gary Kong shot 70s.
The field of 90 players will be cut to the top 35 and ties for tomorrow's final round.
