Police investigate stabbing incident

By Lynda Arakawa
Advertiser Staff Writer

Police yesterday were investigating a case in which a 60-year-old man who was stabbed in the chest ended up on State Capitol grounds.

Police Sgt. Larry Santos said the man, who has no local address, told paramedics someone stabbed him, but that police could not verify the statement because there were no witnesses to the stabbing. The man, who was stabbed with a knife, was in stable condition last night at The Queen's Medical Center, Santos said.

A man who called 911 said he saw the victim stagger from the 'ewa end of Beretania Street toward the front steps of the State Capitol near the Father Damien statue. The man said the victim claimed he had had an argument with someone and that "they were going to get all his fingers."

Santos said the victim was arrested about 2:40 a.m. yesterday in Kane'ohe on a $500 outstanding contempt warrant and had a knife in his possession. The man was later taken to the state sheriff's cellblock and faced a District Court judge, who released him, Santos said.

A state sheriff said the knife, which was still lodged in the victim when emergency personnel arrived, appeared to be a pocket knife.
