Reg Weaver, president of the National Education Association, will speak about critical needs in the American educational system at noon Thursday at the Hilton Hawaiian Village Tapa Ballroom.

Hawai'i teachers and the general public are welcome; registration for the $32 luncheon is available through noon Tuesday by calling 956-8041.

Weaver, whose talk is titled "Is America Preparing Its Students for a Competitive Global Environment?", will be in Hawai'i less than 24 hours to give the 2004 N.H. Paul Chung Memorial Lecture sponsored by the Pacific Asian Management Institute of the University of Hawai'i College of Business.

"Reg Weaver will address the need to focus on strategies that support public education and student achievement, and how America can learn from international developments in education," said Shirley Daniel, the institute director.

Weaver, who took office in 2002 as head of the 2.7-million-member organization that advocates for public education, is an Illinois middle school science teacher who has spent 30 years in the classroom.
