Swart nets second straight victory

ASHLEY SWART

Balmy weather and glassy water at Hale'iwa were to Ashley Swart's liking during yesterday's Surf & Sea Cup swim, helping the University of San Diego junior post the top female time for her second consecutive North Shore Series win.

The 19-year-old Swart won the 1.2-mile race in 23 minutes, 38 seconds. Two weeks ago, the Kaiser High School graduate took the 1-mile Raging Isle Sprint, from Sunset Beach to Pipeline, in 19 minutes, 25 seconds.

Swart found this race much smoother than the first.

"It was pretty easy going straight out. It was really smooth," Swart said. "Last time was a lot harder because there were waves, and no buoys to guide you. This time I could see every single buoy."

Swart, who plans to compete in all four of this year's North Shore Series events, broke away between the first and second buoys, and proceeded to put almost a minute of time between herself and her nearest competitor, Christel Simms, who finished in 24:33.

"You just gotta dig deep and get through it," Swart said. "In the beginning I was with a couple of the other girls, and right after the first buoy I started sprinting. I needed to get away from them. If you hold back too much, at the end, you regret it. I just gave my all. It was a fun swim."

ANDREW LESTER

Andrew Lester, a senior at Moanalua High School, won the men's race in 22 minutes, 10 seconds. Lester was in no real danger of being caught, finishing well ahead of the men's field by 11 seconds. The 17-year-old competed for the first time in the North Shore Series only two weeks ago.

"I was swimming really close to Dustin (Fukuda.) He helped me pull harder," Lester said. "I thought Dustin would get it."

Swart, Lester and Fukuda all swim for the Kamehameha Swim Club, which posted the top six finishes in the event.

Two more North Shore Series events will be held in August, with competitors earning points from each race based on their finish. At the end of the series, the three swimmers with the most points earn awards.

Absent from the race was last year's winner and Olympic Trials athlete, Noa Sakamoto, also a Kamehameha Swim Club member.
