Baldwin graduate Rowe 9th in semifinal

Advertiser Staff and News Services

Caleb Rowe, a 2001 Baldwin High School graduate and senior at California, just missed advancing to the finals of the men's 200-meter breaststroke yesterday at the U.S. Olympic swimming trials at Long Beach, Calif.

Rowe, from Wailuku, finished in 2 minutes and 17.36 seconds, and placed ninth. The top eight from the semifinal heats advance to the finals. Brendan Hanson won the semifinal heat in a time of 2:10.76. Ryan Hurley finished eighth with a time of 2:16.41.

Rowe's semifinal time was better than his preliminary, in which he posted a time of 2:18.20.

Rowe finished eighth in the 200-meter breaststroke at the 2004 NCAA Championships.

A five-time high school state champion, Rowe led Baldwin to the 2000 state championship.

On Friday, Nicole Mackey, a University of Hawai'i sophomore, failed to advance out of the preliminaries of the women's 200 individual medley.

Mackey, from Los Alamitos, Calif., finished 25th in the preliminaries in a time of 2:19.95. Katie Hoff won the preliminary in a time of 2:13.50.

Mackey helped the UH team finish 26th at the NCAA Championships.

This was Mackey's second Olympic trials, having qualified in 2000, as well.
