Tranquillite takes title in Vic-Maui yacht race

Tranquillite took first overall on corrected time in the IBM 2004 Vic-Maui yacht race, which ended yesterday.
The Swan 46 yacht, skippered by Jack Shannon out of Bellevue, Wash., finished the 2,308-nautical mile race from Victoria, B.C., to Lahaina, Maui, in 9 days, 6 hours, 32 hours, 13 minutes, to also win Division 3 honors.
Flash, a Transpac 52 skippered by Dwight Jefferson out of Vancouver, B.C., won Division 1, while Voodoo Child, a J 130 43, skippered by Brian Duchin out of Tacoma, Wash., won Division 2.
More sailing Winnetou expected to win Pacific Cup
Martin Brauns' Winnetou arrived at Kane'ohe Bay yesterday and appears to be the overall race leader on corrected time in the 13th biennial West Marine Pacific Cup from San Francisco Bay.
The Santa Cruz 52, out of the San Francisco Yacht Club, finished the 2,070-nautical-mile journey in an unofficial time of 8 days, 22 hours, 58 minutes, 6 seconds, and is expected to take both the overall honors and Division E.
Other division leaders yet to arrive: Eyrie (doublehanded), Ghost (A), California Girl (B), Inspired Environments (C), Sensation (D), Braveheart (maxis).

Metzger-Holdren team 13th in Mallorca
Punahou School alum Stein Metzger and partner Dax Holdren, who have already qualified for the 2004 Athens Olympic Games, placed 13th in the $360,000 Mallorca Open when they were eliminated yesterday at Santa Ponsa Mallorca.
Metzger and Holdren finished with a 2-2 record in the 10th men's SWATCH-FIVB World Tour event of the 2004 season, and improved their Olympic qualifying point total to 1,980 to rank 11th. They were eliminated from the Mallorca Open by seventh-seeded Fred Souza and Harley Marquesa, 22-20, 21-15.
Surfing Beschen eliminated at Mr Price Pro
Shane Beschen, of O'ahu's North Shore, was eliminated in the round of 64 at the Mr Price Pro surf meet yesterday at North Beach, Durban, South Africa.
Beschen lost to Damien Hobgood (United States) and Kai Otton (Ausralia), and had to settle for equal 49th place and $1,100 in prize money.
The Mr Price Pro is a six-star rated Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) World Qualifying Series (WQS) event.

Tsuda, Shields defend Soljah fight titles
Masanori Tsuda defended his shooto light heavyweight championship Friday night at the Blaisdell Arena as part of the Soljah Fight Night 2004.
Tsuda and Dustin Denes fought to a majority draw in the three-round bout.
In the feature matchup, Jake Shields forced Ray "Bradda" Cooper into submission at 3:30 in the first round of their shooto middleweight championship fight.
Also, Jens Pulver KO'd Stephen Paling with 1:45 left in the first round in an undercard lightweight match.
