Ka Mo'i senior men prevail in Ma'ili Beach regatta

MA'ILI — Knowing the water conditions of the Wai'anae Coast paid off for the Na Keiki O Ka Mo'i Canoe Club.

Ka Mo'i won the senior men's race yesterday, beating the Manu O Ke Kai Canoe Club by seven seconds at Ma'ili Beach Park. It was the first time during this Na 'Ohana O Na Hui Wa'a regatta season that Manu O Ke Kai has lost.

"We had little bumps here and there during the race," said Greg Pavo, whose crew won in 11 mnutes, 34.89 seconds, and trains at nearby Pokai Bay. "It was an advantage to us feeling the bumps ahead of time and making a move for it."

Ka Mo'i led a tight group of three canoes into the one-mile turn of the 1 1/2-mile race, followed closely by Manu O Ke Kai and Koa Kai. Ka Mo'i then distanced itself from the pack and was congratulated by teammates once they reached the shore.

"It's really good," Pavo said of the win. "We've been headhunting them for awhile but we weren't training seriously enough. I think even this week, we didn't train seriously enough but we went out there and had fun than seriously try to take them down.

"It worked."

As opposed to the calm waters at Ke'ehi Lagoon, where most of this season's regattas have been held, the conditions at Ma'ili offered up a challenge.

"Ke'ehi is more of a deadwater lagoon where you don't have currents ripping in or ripping out," Pavo explained. "As for here, you have swells, currents and different tide conditions. When you go the outside, you hit a drop-off where it's deeper and it gets harder. You come across a lot more different situations in a race course compared to Ke'ehi Lagoon."

"It's a tough place to steer because the water currents move a lot and the swells and winds, compared to Ke'ehi which is relatively flat and all the water moves in the same direction, this is challenging for the steersman to hold the boat straight," said Dave Randall, men's coach for Koa Kai Canoe Club.

Randall pointed out that it's also difficult to see the colored flags representing each team's lanes.

"They're the same color going out and the same color coming back," Randall added.

The same three teams repeated as division winners with Kane'ohe taking the AAA with 73 points, Koa Kai winning the AA with 37 and the Waikiki Beach Boys claiming the A also with 37. All three teams are undefeated this season.

Kane'ohe won seven of the 20 youth events and earned points in 17 of them. It also set course records in the girls 15 and boys 18 races.

Koa Kai won five events and Randall credited the contributions of everyone in the club toward their success this season.

"We've been getting points from our kids, women and men," Randall said. "Everybody has been contributing all year which has been a pleasant surprise for us."

The Beach Boys won seven events and set course records in the women's senior and women's open 4 races.

Manu O Ke Kai's girls 18, men's novice A and men's sophomore teams also broke records.
