Irons dominates surf meet in South Africa

Two-time defending world champion Andy Irons and Roy Powers, both of Hanalei, Kaua'i, finished 1-2 in the Mr Price Pro yesterday in 3- to 5-foot surf at North Beach, Durban, South Africa.

Irons scored 18 points on his two waves (8.5 and 9.5) to beat Powers (13.86), Greg Emslie of South Africa (13.03) and Damien Hobgood of Florida (11.17) in the finals.

Powers, 23, was the 40th seed in the event.

Irons won $15,000.


YACHTING

Winning yacht crosses finish line

Winnetou, which is expected to be the corrected time winner of the West Marine Pacific Cup, crossed the finish line in Kane'ohe Bay at 10:43 a.m. yesterday.

The Santa Cruz 52, entered by Martin Brauns of San Francisco, also won Division E of the San Francisco-to-O'ahu race.

Eyrie, the doublehanded leader, is expected to arrive Wednesday.

Ghost, which is leading division A, is predicted in tomorrow afternoon.


YOUTH BASEBALL

O'ahu wins Ripken; Hilo captures Ruth

Jarrett Arakawa pitched a two-hitter and had three hits to lead the O'ahu Stars to a 10-0 victory over Hilo East in the championship game of the Cal Ripken 12-under State Tournament at Hilo, Hawai'i, yesterday.

Kewby Meyer and Jeremy Fujimoto hit home runs in the third inning for O'ahu.

O'ahu Stars advance to the Pacific Southwest Regional, July 28 to Aug. 3, in Fallon, Nev.

Also yesterday at Hilo, Hilo East beat O'ahu Stars, 2-0, in the Babe Ruth 15-under State Tournament title game.

Hilo East advances to the Pacific Southwest Regional, Aug. 4 to 10, in El Segundo, Calif.


BEACH VOLLEYBALL

Lambert, Kiraly finish third in New Jersey

Punahou alum Mike Lambert and Karch Kiraly lost to Jake Gibb and Adam Jewell, 21-14, 21-19, to finish third at the Association of Volleyball Professionals Belmar Open in New Jersey yesterday.

Matt Fuerbringer and Casey Jennings defeated Jewell and Gibb in the title match, 21-14, 21-19.


MEETING

Wagner will speak at Honolulu QB Club

Former University of Hawai'i football coach Bob Wagner is the featured speaker at today's weekly meeting of The Honolulu Quarterback Club. Wagner is the athletic director at Kamehameha Schools-Hawai'i campus.

Other scheduled speakers include Scott Robbs, of KKEA sports radio, and Lloyd Hisaka, director of the Hawai'i Football Officials Association.

Lunch is at 11:30 a.m. and the program begins at noon at the Pagoda Hotel ballroom. The public is welcome.
