Bellows may get bigger store

The military wants to expand a convenience store at Bellows Air Force Station and is seeking comments on a plan to build an 8,000 square-foot facility at the same location as the existing store on approximately one acre of land.

The Army and Air Force Exchange Service expects to begin the project, estimated to cost $1 million to $3 million, in October.

The current 3,450-square-foot Bellows Air Force Station Shoppette was built in 1959 and is too small, according to The Environmental Notice of the Office of Environmental Quality Control.

No significant adverse impacts are anticipated from the project, the notice said.

Church fire no accident, police say

Police have classified a fire set at a Roman Catholic church in 'Ewa Beach as first-degree criminal property damage.

Sunday night's blaze was contained to the entrance to a chapel next to Our Lady of Perpetual Help, and damage was estimated at $8,000, fire Capt. Emmit Kane said.

The front door was ajar when firefighters arrived, Kane said.

A man in his 20s who was outside the building was taken to the hospital for treatment of smoke inhalation and minor injuries, he said.
