ISLE FILE
UH soccer picked 2nd in WAC

Advertiser Staff

The University of Hawai'i was picked to press defending champion Southern Methodist for the Western Athletic Conference women's soccer title.

The Rainbow Wahine were chosen to finish second by conference coaches for the third straight year, after claiming a share of the regular-season title with SMU in last year.

The Mustangs received eight first-place votes and 64 points and the Rainbow Wahine got one first-place vote and 55 points. SMU, which has won three consecutive titles, returns eight starters, but is exiting the WAC next year for Conference USA.

UH, which opens its season Aug. 27, returns nine starters, including two-time scoring champion and WAC Player of the Year Natasha Kai, and all-WAC performers Robyn deHay and Joelle Sugai.

The complete poll is in For the Record.

Arceneaux's injury report due today

Hawaiian Islanders head coach Cal Lee had two capable quarterbacks available for last Saturday's game against the Bakersfield Blitz.

That may not be the case this week.

Darnell Arceneaux came off the bench in the fourth quarter against Bakersfield and was hit low on an incomplete pass after just two plays.

He was down for a few minutes, helped off the field and diagnosed with a sprained right knee. He was scheduled to undergo an MRI last night, and the results won't be available until this morning.

"I'll take it one day at a time," Arceneaux said yesterday. "If it's torn, I'm done."

Shawn Withy-Allen, who started the game, replaced Arceneaux. The Islanders (7-6) lost to the Blitz, 43-41.

Lee held out all last week on naming his starter and made a game-time decision to start Withy-Allen over Arceneaux.

If Arceneaux is unavailable for this week's home game against the Louisville Fire (8-5), Withy-Allen would make his third consecutive start. Aaron Smith, a converted receiver/linebacker, would be his backup.

The Islanders will finish up the regular season at the Central Valley Coyotes (Fresno, Calif.) and Bakersfield.
