Fukui chef for new restaurant
Evening in Paradise on the Big Island
Correction: An item in a previous version of these Quick Bites gave only the at-the-door price for Saturday's Joy of Food & Wine event.
The seventh annual Joy of Food and Wine event, 5:30 to 9 p.m. Saturday in the Hilton Hawaiian Village's Tapa Ballroom, will feature more than 200 vintages from around the world not just France and Italy, but also Greece, Chile, Portugal, Spain and South Africa. Karen Syrmos of Island Epicure/Y. Hata is assembling not just cheeses to taste, but also such accompaniments as tupelo honey, quince paste and glazed, roasted figs. Breads from La Brea Bakery will be served, too. Tickets are $100 at the door or $90 in advance at Fujioka's Wine Merchants. Info: 566-3451.
Hiroshi Fukui, longtime chef at L'Uraku Restaurant, has joined the D.K. Kodama-Chuck Furuya group (Sansei, Vino) to open a Eurasian restaurant this fall. All is not decided but it's likely that the restaurant will occupy the site of Sansei at Restaurant Row (a new Sansei is opening in Waikiki). Fukui said he was ready for a change and, "if I'm gonna take a chance, I might as well take it with Chuck and D.K." The restaurant will incorporate both casual and fine-dining options and showcase Fukui's East-West style.
Guests chefs from resorts and restaurants all over the Big Island will prepare the tasting menu for the sixth annual Evening in Paradise event, a fund-raiser for Big Island United Way, set for 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. July 24 at the Fairmount Orchid. Orchid chef James Babian will host Michael Fennelly of Restaurant Kaikodo, Mike Halpin of Merriman's, Edwin Goto of the Mauna Lani Bay Hotel & Bungalows, Etsuji Umezu of the Hualalai Resort, and others. Tickets are $75 for adults, $40 for children 5 to 12 (younger than 5 get in free); purchase from www.HawaiiUnitedWay.org or call Big Island United Way, (808) 935-6393.
