No Hawai'i golfers make men's Publinx cut

All five Hawai'i golfers failed to make the cut following yesterday's second-round of stroke-play qualifying of the 2004 U.S. Amateur Public Links Championship at Maple Grove, Minn.

Makawao's Royden Heirakuji shot a 2-over-par 74 and former University of Hawai'i golfer Matthew Kodama carded a 3-over-par 75 at the Rush Creek Golf Club yesterday. Both golfers registered 5-over-par 149s after 36 holes and finished tied for 68th place.

Kapa'a's Casey Watabu shot a 6-over-par 78 and finished tied for 105th place at 153. 'Aiea's Matthew Ma shot a 9-over-par 81 and finished tied for 128th place at 156. Hilo's Chris Igawa shot a 7-over-par 79 to finish tied for 134th place at 157.

The 156-player field was cut yesterday to the low 64 scorers for today's first round of match play. The cut was 4-over-par 148.

Danny Green, of Jackson Tenn., set a USGA and U.S. Amateur Public Links 36-hole stroke play record of 13-under-par 131 to win medalist honors yesterday. He fired a 4-under-par 68 to follow Monday's Publinx record of 9-under-par 63.

Baab, Okino tied for second in age groups

Lihu'e's Allan Baab and Honolulu's Cyd Okino are tied for second in their respective divisions after the first round of the 2004 Callaway Golf Junior World Golf Championships yesterday at San Diego.

Baab shot a 1-under-par 71 and is tied with six other golfers in the boys 15 to 17 division at the Torrey Pines Golf Course-South Course.

The group trails Thailand's Chinnarat Phandungsil, who shot a 68.

Okino shot a 2-over-par 61 and is tied with one other golfer in the girls 9 to 10 division at the Reidy Creek Golf Course.

Dottie Ardina of the Philippines leads that division at 3-under-par 56.

Pearl City's Mari Chun shot a 3-under-par 71 and is tied for third in the girls 15 to 17 division at the Torrey Pines Golf Course-North Course.

Kailua's Dwyer tied for 12th after 2-over 74

Kailua's Bridget Dwyer shot a second-round 2-over-par 74 yesterday and is tied for 12th in the 74th Women's Trans National Championship at Keswick, Va.

Dwyer, a 1999 Punahou School and 2004 UCLA graduate, is tied with three other golfers at 2-over-par 146.

Brittany Lang and Sarah Kemp are tied for the lead at 6-under-par 138.

'Aiea's Merynn Ito shot a 74 and is tied for 45th place with seven other golfers at 8-over-par 152.
