HPU names Parkey as cheer coach

Matt Parkey has been named new coach for the award-winning Hawai'i Pacific cheerleading team, the university announced yesterday.

Parkey, a nine-time national championship cheerleader, moved to Hawai'i this summer from the University of Louisville in Kentucky, where he earned a bachelor's degree in communications.

Originally from Dallas, Parkey has been cheering since his sophomore year in high school.

Parkey replaces Ashley Edwards who returned to the Mainland, according to a media relations spokesperson.

HPU has won two national championships in the past two years. In 2002, HPU placed second in the nation.
