ISLAND LIFE SHORTS
Bard's courtly comedy at Paliku

Advertiser Staff and News Services

One of Shakespeare's blessings also is his curse: coining the phrase "To be or not to be."

Great line, but it overshadows some of his other works — such as "Love's Labor's Lost," showing at 8 p.m. today as part of the 2004 Hawaii Shakespeare Festival in Paliku Theatre at Windward Community College.

Call 235-7433 for tickets, buy online at eTickethawaii.com, or visit a University of Hawai'i ticket outlet. Today's show deals with a decree that no man shall talk to a woman — the edict coming at about the same time four beautiful women enter the king's court.

To the king, we say: "good luck."

Don't waste away idle time

Boring car ride? Stuck in traffic? Entrée taking a long time to arrive? "Fun on the Run!" (Workman Publishing, $8.95) a little tip book for little attention spans, lists 324 instant family activities, such as "Ice Cube Tower" and "Great Games with Sugar Packets."

Sample: If Mom and kids find themselves with an unexpected wait at the doctor's office, they can play the "Handbag Memory Game." Mom empties out the contents of her purse and lets kids examine everything for a minute or two. Then she puts everything back to see how many items they can name. "Fun!" is available at most bookstores or online at workman.com.

FINAL WORD

Pat O'Brien

Leaving "Access Hollywood" to host his new syndicated show "The Insider," premiering Sept. 13:

"It will not be tabloid. If it gets tabloid, you'll see me get in my pickup truck and leave town. You can hold me to that."
