Ace helps Kono share lead at Junior PGA

Honolulu's Stephanie Kono sank a hole in one en route to a share of the girls division lead after the first round of the Westfield Junior PGA Championship, the PGA of America's national championship for boys and girls ages 17 and younger.

Kono, 14, aced the 16th hole using a 9-iron at Westfield Group Country Club to tie Kathleen White of Waukegan, Ill., at 1-under-par 70. They hold a one-shot lead entering the second of four rounds.

"I hit the shot really good and I thought this was going to be good (for me) to make birdie," Kono said. "It was two feet left of the hole and then it bounced right and at first we thought it went behind the flagstick, but then Mandi (Hedburg) said 'Oh I swear that went in.' "

Maui's Kelly Nakashima shot an 80.

Hudson Swafford, 16, of Tallahassee, Fla., shot a 2-under-par 69 to take a one-shot lead in the boys division. Hilo's Jacob Low shot a 75.


Ito, Dwyer advance in Trans National

'Aiea's Merynn Ito and Kailua's Bridget Dwyer yesterday advanced to the round of 32 of the 74th Women's Trans National Championship at Glenmore Country Club in Keswick, Va.

Ito defeated Amanda Diamond, of Leesburg, Va., on the 20th hole and Dwyer stopped Sally Krueger of San Francisco, 3 and 2.


Hawai'i golfers fare well at Callaway

Hawai'i golfers continued to do well after the second round yesterday of the Callaway Golf Junior World Championships being played at several courses around San Diego.

  • Girls 6-and-under division: Allisen Corpuz of Waipahu is tied for the lead at 29-over after a 65—137.
  • Girls 9 to 10: Honolulu's Cy Okino was fourth at 4-over after a 61—122 and Kyung King of Wailuku, Maui, was tied for seventh at 7-over after a 62—125.
  • Girls 11 to 12: Kimberly Kim of Pahoa, Hawai'i, was tied for first at even par after a 59—124.
  • Girls 13 to 14: Ayaka Kaneko of Honolulu was tied for eighth at 5-over after a 74—149.
  • Girls 15 to 17: Mari Chun of Pearl City was second at 6-under after a 71—142.
  • Boys 15 to 17: Allan Baab of Lihu'e, Kaua'i, shot a 5-over 77 is tied for 10th at 148.
