Bolla officially named UH women's coach

Jim Bolla was approved as the University of Hawai'i's new women's basketball coach by the Board of Regents this morning.

The regents voted 9-1 to approve a three-year contract worth approximately $120,000 for Bolla. Jane Tatibouet cast the only "no" vote. She said her opposition was based upon Bolla receiving a salary at the top of the scale for coaches in the Western Athletic Conference. Salaries in the WAC range from $60,000-$120,000, the board was told.

Bolla, 52, last coached in college at Nevada-Las Vegas eight years ago. He was 300-120 in 14 years at UNLV. In his first six season, Bolla was co-head coach with his first wife, Sheila Strike-Bolla.

Bolla replaces Vince Goo, who announced his retirement in February.

Bolla will be the sixth head coach in the history of Rainbow Wahine basketball.
