Sand Island POW subject of free talk

Advertiser Staff

Writer Patsy Sumie Saiki will tell the little-known story of the first Japanese prisoner of war held at the Sand Island internment camp, from 12:30 to 2:30 p.m. tomorrow at the Japanese Cultural Center of Hawai'i in Mo'ili'ili. Admission is free.

The event is part of a summer series related to World War II internees held on O'ahu. The day after the attack on Pearl Harbor, Kazuo Sakamaki, skipper of a Japanese mini-sub, was captured and brought to the makeshift Sand Island camp.

Saiki also will sell and sign copies of her reprinted book on internment, "Ganbare! An Example of Japanese Spirit."

The series is paired with an exhibit, "Dark Clouds Over Paradise: The Hawai'i Internees Story," in the center's Community Gallery. The exhibit is open until July 31. Gallery hours are 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday.
