Hawai'i surfers advance in Billabong

Hawai'i's Kalani Robb and Sunny Garcia advanced to the third round of the Billabong Pro surf meet at Jeffreys Bay, South Africa.

Robb eliminated Tim Curran of California, 12.50 to 10.57, in 4-foot surf yesterday.

Garcia defeated Bruce Irons of Kaua'i, 15.43 to 13.33, in the second round in 4- to 5-foot surf on Wednesday.

Two-time defending world champion Andy Irons of Kaua'i earned a third-round berth with a first-round victory on Tuesday.

Meanwhile, swell conditions dropped overnight and competition in the third round was postponed today.

Elsewhere, seven surfers from Hawai'i remain in contention for the world longboard title at the Nokia International Longboard Bear Championships in Biarritz, France.

Noah Shimabukuro advanced to the sixth round yesterday after finishing second in his fifth-round heat.



HIGH SCHOOLS

• St. Joseph seeking volleyball teams: The 4th Annual St. Joseph Volleyball Classic is still accepting teams for the high school girls tournament, Aug. 19 to 21, at Hilo's Civic Auditorium.

The Classic has confirmed participation from Beverly Hills (Calif.), Iolani, Hawai'i Baptist, Kamehameha-Hawai'i, Kealakehe and host St. Joseph.

The tournament is hoping to attract a field of at least 12 to 15 teams. The format is double pool play, followed by an elimination bracket in gold and silver divisions.

The entry fee is $175 and the deadline has been extended until July 31. Awards will be given in both divisions along with all-star teams in both divisional brackets.

For more information, contact St. Joseph coach Rachelle Hanohano at (808) 896-5051. There is a limited amount of space left and teams will be accepted on a first-come, first-serve basis.

• Kahunahana named Kaiser softball coach: Kaiser High has appointed Deanedra Kahunahana as softball coach, athletic director Ricky Shimokawa said.

Kahunahana, a Kaiser alum and staff member at the Hawai'i Kai school, was a three-time O'ahu Interscholastic Association Eastern Division all-star in the 1990s.



GOLF

•Yun has one-stroke lead in Pua Melia: Menin Yun shot an opening-round 1-over-par 74 yesterday to take a one-shot lead into today's final round of the 28th annual Pua Melia Women's Invitational at Olomana Golf Links.

Ku'ulei Ka'ai (75) is second. Bev Kim, Mona Kim and Marcie Rudich are tied for third at 78.



TENNIS

• Kapalua tournament accepting entries: The Kapalua Open Tennis Championships is seeking entrants for its September tournament.

This United States Tennis Association-sanctioned event includes open, 4.5, 4.0, 3.5 and 3.0 divisions in men's and women's singles and doubles. Entry fee is $50 per person.

The tournament is scheduled for Sept. 3 to 6 at the Kapalua Tennis Garden.
