Ka'ae beats Kim for Pua Melia golf title

Ku'ulei Ka'ae defeated Bev Kim in a playoff to win the 28th annual Pua Melia Invitational yesterday at Olomana Golf Links.

Ka'ae, whose home course is Olomana, runs Pua Melia Leis at the airport.

She shot a final-round 77 while Kim shot 1-over-par 74. Both finished at 6-over 152.

Ka'ae lost the championship in a playoff with Kathy Tsukada last year and finished third two years ago.

Linda Hoffman won overall low net honors, beating Marty Drew in a playoff. Both are 17-handicappers and finished with a net total of 134.

SURFING

Small surf delays Billabong Pro contest

The third round of the Billabong Pro surf meet at Jeffreys Bay, South Africa, was postponed yesterday because of inadequate surf conditions.

Hawai'i's Kalani Robb lost to Australian Jake Patterson in the second heat when the third round resumed today. Hawai'i's Andy Irons and Sunny Garcia will surf their third-round heats later today.

TENNIS

Sports psychologist will give free clinic

Sports Psychologist Roland Carlstedt will conduct a free Sports Performance Seminar on July 30 at the Central O'ahu Regional Park Tennis Complex, from 6:30 to 8 p.m.

There will be a King/Queen of the Court competition following the seminar.

CORP will also be the site of a Compass Draw Tournament on July 31 and Aug. 1.

BASEBALL

O'ahu team wins 9-under at AAUs

The Hawaiian Warriors defeated the Florida Extreme, 7-2, to win the 9-under AAU National championship yesterday in Orlando, Fla.

The Warriors, a select team from around O'ahu, won eight of their 10 games, including all five single-elimination games, two of which were played yesterday.

In the semifinal, the Warriors, behind Kakaku Iaea's pitching, beat the Hit Master Hurricanes of Florida, 1-0.

Travis Garcia-Perreira drove in Edison Sakata in the third and Reece Foy saved the game with a diving catch in deep right with two on and two out in the sixth and final inning.

In the championship, Garcia-Perreira was the winning pitcher and also had two hits and a double. The Warriors scored five runs in the second.

"We felt great. It was a team effort," said Garcia-Perreira. "We'd like to thank our parents for helping us out to get here.

"When Brent Sakurai caught the ball to make the last out, everyone was throwing their gloves up and everyone in the stands were going crazy."
