Vendors sought for swap meet

The Gentry Waipio Shopping Center seeks participants to run booths at a Community Swap Meet, 7:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Aug. 21 at the center.

The swap meet is designed to help the community "get ready for school." Booth participants must pay a $20 fee, with proceeds benefiting local charities. For more information call Sherry Goya at 288-2590.



Jones, Frazier of UH to speak

University of Hawai'i football coach June Jones and athletic director Herman Frazier will talk about "the true meaning of success" at a community meeting Wednesday hosted by lawmakers from 'Aiea and Pearl City. The meeting will be from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at the Pearl Ridge Elementary School cafeteria.

Kailua parties like it's 1939

A historical display and storytelling will be featured at the Kailua Historical Society party from 3 to 5 p.m. today at Kailua United Methodist Church, 1110 Kailua Road.

The event will highlight Kailua during the 1930s and '40s when there was a racetrack in the community.

Participants are asked to dress in 1930s and '40s attire: big hats, fancy mu'umu'u, lei and aloha shirt. Prizes will be awarded.

The society will also install its new officers at the event.



Relay benefits cancer society

Teams will be raising money for the American Cancer Society at the Ko'olauloa Relay for Life starting at 4:45 p.m. July 30 and running until 7 a.m. July 31 at Hau'ula Community Park.

The event is an opportunity to keep the memory alive of a cancer victim or to show support for a cancer survivor.

2 men indicted in 2001 stabbing

A Big Island grand jury has indicted two men in connection with a 2001 stabbing at the large pavilion in Wailoa State Park in Hilo.

Joseph A. Ramones and Ronald Paz were each indicted on first-degree assault charges Thursday in connection with the stabbing of Sy Leialoha.

Paz, 42, was arrested in connection with the case shortly after police found a 19-year-old Hilo man in the park the night of Aug. 31, 2001, with stab wounds to his back.



Driver indicted in fatal crash

A Big Island grand jury has indicted a man in connection with a crash last year that killed a motorcyclist from Pepe'ekeo.

Mark Kaneshiro was indicted on a charge of third-degree negligent homicide for allegedly operating a vehicle in a negligent manner in the May 21, 2003, collision that killed Pedro Pacheco Jr., 60.

According to police reports, Pacheco was traveling toward Hilo on the Volcano Highway when he was rear-ended by a 2002 Nissan Sentra. The impact threw him from the motorcycle, and he was then struck by another car.
