Bosco Burns' ashes to be strewn

Advertiser Staff

Friends and family members of Bosco Burns, a noted surfer and pioneer in the surfboard manufacturing industry, will paddle off Hale'iwa today to spread his ashes. Burns died July 3 at age 64.

Burns was born in Pasadena, Calif., and went to work in the early '60s for the Hobie company, which designed and manufactured sailboats, kayaks and other ocean craft. In 1966 he moved to Hawai'i, but returned to California to work for Hobie.

His friends said Burns missed O'ahu's North Shore so much that he quickly returned for good. Leaving behind a job in large-scale manufacturing, Burns honed the art of backyard glassing.

When he wasn't working on surfboards, Burns was active in the community and fought to protect the North Shore from overdevelopment.

He is survived by his wife, Diane Anderson-Burns; son, Christian; daughter, Lori Aipolani; brothers, Jeffrey Jahns and Beatty; sisters, Alice Rab Stewart, Audrey Allred and Loretta Elam; and two grandchildren.

The service will be at 6:30 p.m. today at 61-669 Kamehameha Highway, Hale'iwa.
