| Slope Rating might help you find right course By Ann Miller Advertiser Staff Writer There is a way to find out if that golf course you played is exceptionally tough, or if your game was just taking another siesta. Knowing the Slope Rating in advance might help you avoid a collision with a course that is too hard or — are we kidding? — too easy. In this year's listing of green fees for Hawai'i's courses, we've added the Slope Rating from the forward, middle and back tees (when available). We hope it will help direct you to a fun game, whatever your definition of fun. Every course should have a Course and Slope Rating from the U.S. Golf Association, for each set of tees rated. They are integral parts of computing a player's handicap. They are also a sneak peek into a course's degree of difficulty. Yardage is primary in determining a rating, but there are 15 other factors, including hazards, trees, out of bounds, "recoverability," topography, prevailing wind and altitude. A Course Rating is established for that rare breed — the scratch golfer. There is also a rating for the bogey player known as the Bogey Rating. The Bogey Rating is not usually published, but is used to determine a Slope Rating. The greater the difference between the Course and Bogey ratings, the higher the Slope. Slope Rating is an evaluation of the relative difficulty of a course for non-scratch players. In other words, the vast majority of us. Slope Rating is between 55 and 155, with higher numbers more difficult. Numbers have no correlation to strokes. USGA Course and Slope ratings are calculated and certified by local golf associations before being issued to a club. Our ratings come from the Hawai'i State Golf Association. We used women's ratings for front tees and men's ratings for others. |
